Acne and skin microbiome

How to treat acne for powerful results

As a skincare professional, you are probably all too aware of how challenging it can be to treat Acne and problematic skin. Many treatments and products work to treat the symptoms of Acne, but sadly the root cause of the issue is usually not addressed – making long-term results virtually impossible.

If you have treated any client who is afflicted by Acne, you know that this skin condition substantially impacts a person’s quality of life. Some of the psychosocial side effects of Acne are withdrawal, lack of confidence and motivation, and depression, to name a few.

This is why we are so excited, here at Vital Plus, to bring you Nimue’s NEW Purifying Range for problematic skin. It is truly a game changer when it comes to treating Acne. This blog looks closely at Acne as a skin condition and how Nimue’s latest innovative technology is reaping exceptional results.

What Is Acne?

When we look at the rationale behind the development of the Problematic Range, we need to go back to the beginning and understand what causes a problematic skin condition.

Acne develops when sebum, an oily substance that lubricates your hair and skin, and dead skin cells plug hair follicles. Bacteria can trigger inflammation and infection, resulting in more severe Acne.

Acne affects the skin’s pilosebaceous system, including the hair follicles and oil glands. As we know, Acne is most common in teenagers and young adults but can also occur in adults.

When dealing with a client that presents with Acne, one or more of the following symptoms may be present:

  • Closed comedones (whiteheads)
  • Open comedones (blackheads)
  • Pustules
  • Papules
  • Cysts
  • Nodules
  • Milia
  • Redness
  • Inflammation

You would typically expect acne breakouts on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders.

Acne Grades

Each type of acne symptom requires a different treatment approach.

A correct treatment programme can reduce the risk of long-term skin damage, such as pitting, scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

As skincare professionals, we need to be aware of the different acne grades and which ones we may treat with Nimue.

Grade 1: Comedones, occasional papules (May be treated with Nimue)

Grade 2: Papules, comedones, few pustules (May be treated with Nimue)

Grade 3: Predominant pustules, nodules (May be treated with Nimue)

Grade 4Mainly cysts, abscesses, widespread scarring (May not be treated)

Now, this is the fascinating part – did you know that bacteria and an imbalanced microbiome are one of the main causative factors in developing Acne and related skin conditions?

This understanding is what motivated Nimue to create a range that focuses explicitly on the skin microbiome and the bacteria that could be responsible for the formation of Acne and skin inflammation.

It is clear that consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of the skin microbiome and are seeking products that target the microbiome.

Let’s take a closer look…

The Importance of the Skin Microbiome

The human body is home to trillions of bacteria and other micro-organisms which make up the microbiome. Did you know we have 10x more bacteria than cells, and the formation of this microbiome begins at birth? Most of these bacteria are friends, but some can become troublesome, if there is an overgrowth of any particular bacteria.

What does a normal skin microbiome look like, I hear you ask? The skin is home to a wide variety of normal microbiota, consisting of commensal organisms that derive nutrition from skin cells and secretions such as sweat and sebum. This helps to protect the skin from pathogenic infection.

Not only is the skin microbiome a physical barrier to penetration within deeper tissues by potential pathogens, but it also provides an inhospitable environment for the growth of many pathogens.

To sum it up, the skin microbiome is the balance between skin function, skin immunity and microbial presence on the skin.

When the skin is home to a wide variety of bacteria, this is what they can do:

  • Promote the natural pH of the skin
  • Produce anti-microbial compounds that fight pathogens
  • Reinforce the skin barrier
  • Protect from inflammation.

On the other hand, troublesome bacteria do this:

  • Cause skin infections and conditions such as eczema, rosacea, Acne, and sepsis.
  • Cause skin redness
  • Release enzymes that degrade collagen

Why Might the Skin Microbiome Go Rogue?

There are many reasons why the skin microbiome can be imbalanced and unable to do its protective job well. These include:

  • Incorrect skincare products
  • Washing the skin incorrectly, i.e. using soap
  • Pollution, sun exposure
  • Poor nutrition
  • Lack of exercise
  • Stress
  • Immune system function
  • Underlying medical conditions

When treating Acne, these lifestyle factors need to be considered and as a result, a holistic treatment plan put into action.

When addressing the health of the skin microbiome, the dermabiotic solutions come in the form of pre, pro and postbiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria that are most useful and taken internally to work on the gut microbiome. The gut and skin microbiomes are inextricably linked, making a healthy gut vital for healthy skin.

Pre and postbiotics can be used via the skin extremely effectively, and this is where Nimue’s new Purifying range comes into play.

Treating Acne with Nimue’s Purifying Range

Nimue Purifying Range for Acne

Vital Plus is a huge advocate of protecting the skin microbiome by using products that enhance and maintain it. There is no doubt that your skin microbiome has a direct link to the overall health of your skin. By protecting and nurturing it, we can make a significant impact on all skin conditions.

This is why Nimue created their new Skin Biome Smart Technology to bring you a product range that incorporates the best of the Nimue skin health system and an exclusive formulation of dermabiotics.

By understanding the vital role pre and post-biotics can play in skin care, Nimue’s dermabiotic strategy targets the skin microbiome by creating a favourable environment for “good” skin microbes with abundant nutrients. It also improves the microbial balance by reducing troublemaking microbes and promoting beneficial microbial populations.

As mentioned before, Nimue’s Purifying range is not just about dermabiotics working on their own. This range also includes Nimue’s core health system, phase, 1, 2 and 3 in order to incorporate the concept of repairing and protecting the skin barrier.

Complement this with other key actives specific to the treatment of Problematic skin, and Nimue has a winning formulation.

Acne-Busting Ingredients

Nimue’s Purifying Range contains a postbiotic – Morinda Citrifolia Callus Culture Lysate (also known as NONI) and includes a patented active with sensing signals that denatures bad bacteria (listen to the full presentation to learn more).

Plus, a prebiotic of selected polysaccharides encapsulated in a cellular matrix – Inulin, Yeast Beta Glucan, Undaria Pinnatifida Extract and Yoghurt Powder provides food for the beneficial bacteria only, allowing for their growth. It also reduces infection and inflammation in problematic skin conditions

The range incorporates several active ingredients that synergise with the pre and post-biotics to give astounding results. Here are a few of the exciting primary ingredients:

Nicatinamide (vitamin B3)

Encapsulated retinol

Q: What causes acne?

A: Acne is primarily caused by the overproduction of oil (sebum) by the sebaceous glands, which can clog the hair follicles. This, in turn, leads to the growth of bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. Hormonal changes, such as those during puberty, can trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, contributing to acne development. Other factors like genetics, certain medications, and lifestyle habits may also play a role in acne formation.

Q: What are the most effective treatments for acne?

A: Several effective treatments can help combat acne and provide powerful results. These include:

a) Topical treatments: Over-the-counter creams, gels, or lotions containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids can help unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and kill bacteria.

b) Oral medications: Prescription medications such as antibiotics, oral contraceptives (for females), or isotretinoin (a potent retinoid) may be recommended for severe or persistent acne.

c) Professional procedures: Dermatologists may perform procedures like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser therapy to treat acne and its scars.

d) Lifestyle modifications: Maintaining a regular skincare routine, avoiding excessive touching or picking of the affected areas, keeping the skin clean, and following a healthy diet can also contribute to effective acne treatment.

Q: How long does it take for acne treatments to show results?

A: The timeline for acne treatment results can vary depending on various factors, including the severity of the acne, chosen treatment methods, individual response, and consistency in following the prescribed regimen. While some people may notice improvements within a few weeks, others may require several months of treatment before experiencing noticeable results. It’s important to be patient and follow the recommended treatment plan consistently for the best outcome.

Q: Are there any natural remedies for treating acne?

A: While there is limited scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of natural remedies for acne, some people find certain natural ingredients helpful. Tea tree oil, aloe vera, green tea extract, and witch hazel are examples of natural products that may possess antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution and consult with a healthcare professional or dermatologist before using any natural remedies, as they may not be suitable for everyone and could potentially cause adverse effects.

Q: Can I prevent acne from occurring?

While it’s not always possible to prevent acne entirely, adopting certain preventive measures can help minimize its occurrence:

a) Keep the skin clean: Gently cleanse the face twice a day using a mild cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt, and bacteria.

b) Avoid excessive oil-based products: Opt for oil-free or non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products to prevent clogging of pores.

c) Don’t squeeze or pick at acne lesions: Picking or squeezing acne can worsen inflammation and lead to scarring.

d) Follow a balanced diet: Maintain a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while minimizing the intake of processed foods and sugary snacks.

e) Manage stress: High stress levels can contribute to hormonal imbalances, potentially worsening acne. Incorporate stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation, or hobbies into your routine.

Remember, if you’re experiencing persistent or severe acne, it’s advisable to consult a dermatologist who can provide personalized recommendations and guide you towards the most effective treatment options for your specific situation.
